We now have one of the best recreation departments in Western Carolina that serves all ages on our community with activities both our youngsters and seniors.
Eight years ago when I first became mayor the Highlands Recreation Department was in critical need of repair, maintenance and upgrades. Many of these improvements and new facilities were achieved through collaboration with Macon County and private donor partnerships.
Our facilities now include a new covered swimming pool, a new aerobics room, a renovated gym, and refurbished weight and workout rooms. All meeting/bridge rooms in the Highlands Community Center have been upgraded with new cabinetry and furniture. A new skateboard park was built several years ago, in addition to the resurfacing of two tennis courts and the conversion of another set of tennis courts to multiple pickle ball courts. The dog park pavilion was upgraded this past year.
The town also built a new softball facility during this upgrade period. Recently, the county agreed to share cost with the town in installing a new green energy lighting system for the ball field.
